Medicinal Uses of Jamun Fruits for Diabetics;
The jamun trees are grown and found all over sub tropical and tropical
regions of the world, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nepal
and India. The jamun trees are originated from India and spread over
to the neighboring countries. These Jamun trees are introduced by USDA
to Florida, USA. These trees are grown not only wild but also found in
the backyards of several homes in India. These trees grow large and
live as long as one hundred years and produce flowers every year from
March to June. The flowers have sweet smell and white in color. The
jamun tree produce fruits from June every year. Jamun tree is
scientifically known as Syzygium Cumini and commonly called as by
other names like, Portuguese plum, jambolan plum and Indian blackberry
etc..,
The Jamun fruits are identical to grapes, oval in shape with one seed
surrounding dark purple flesh and with purple skin. Jamun fruits coat
the mouth and tongue with its dark purple color while eating it left
sweet taste in the mouth. Every part of these trees is used for varied
purposes. Jamun fruits, jamun leaves, jamun tree bark are used for
medicinal purposes traditionally in Alternative Medicine and Ayurveda
System of Medicine. Jamun flowers produce nectar and good source of
honey.
Nutritional contents of ripened jamun fruits include; it contains
fructose and glucose along with Vitamin B complex constituents like
folates, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, nicotinic acid, Vitamin
A, Vitamin C. Antioxidants like anthocyanins are also found apart from
potassium, sodium, iron, manganese, zinc, calcium and phosphorous.
Gallic acid, phytoserols, tannin, and resin found in the bark and stem
of the trees. Jamboline, glycoside, and gallic acid found in the seeds
and terponoids are found in flowers and essential volatile oils are
found in the leaves. Ripened fruits provide as much as sixty K
calories of energy per one hundred grams. Proteins, fats,
carbohydrates and water are also present in the fruits.
